This exhibition of Chinese ink drawings by British sculptor Frances Richardson (b.1965) represents a small fragment of her studio output. Known for large scale concrete canvas installations and mdf and corex constructions, the exhibition of drawings is the outcome of the artists contemplation of objects both real and imagined which began during the UK lockdown. Buckets, jugs, balloons, envelopes and discarded nitrous oxide canisters are some of the objects recorded with brush and ink. Unable to erase marks made, the drawings are analogous to the process of carving.
Frances Richardson received her MA in Fine Art Sculpture from the Royal College of Art, London in 2006. Previously to this she studied BA (Hons) Fine Art at Norwich School of Art and Design, and following this course received a Commonwealth Foundation Fellowship and trained as a Yoruba carver under Master Carver Segun Faleye in Nigeria.
Richardson exhibits both nationally and internationally. Key solo exhibitions include: Still attached at all four corners, Bobinska Brownlee, London, If I measure it must exist, Karsten Schubert London 2021, Hunter Gatherer, Kartsen Schubert, London, 2020, Not even nothing can be free from ghosts, Standpoint Gallery, London 2018, In times of brutal instability, Chiara Williams Contemporary Art, London Art Fair 2018, Performed object: Fig.090616, Concrete Canvas, Treforest Industrial Estate, Cardiff 2016, Loss of object and bondage to it Fig.2, Bermondsey Square Sculpture Commission, Vitrine Gallery, London 2015 and Ideas in the Making: drawing structure, Trinity Contemporary, London 2011.
